How I do it.

Every project moves through a series of stages, from the first conversation through to design, approvals and, if required, construction. My role is to guide you through those stages with clarity on what’s happening, what decisions are being made, and what risks and responsibilities sit where. That way, nothing important is hidden behind drawings or technical language.

Where appropriate, I can continue to support a project beyond design, helping coordinate information, respond to contractor queries and keep everything aligned as the build takes shape. This provides continuity from the first idea through to what’s delivered on site.

STAGE 00:

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Every project starts with a conversation. Where possible, I like to meet in person before anything is agreed. This gives us both a chance to see if we’re the right fit and allows me to understand your goals, priorities and constraints before advising on scope and fees.

STAGE 01:

ANALYSIS & SURVEY

This is where the real work begins. I assess the site and existing building, carry out surveys where needed and produce the base drawings that everything else is built from. Getting this right early prevents assumptions and surprises later.

STAGE 02:

CONCEPT DESIGN

This is where layout, use of space and overall design direction are explored. I’ll test ideas against the brief, the site and the budget so we arrive at a clear, workable design before moving forward.

STAGE 03:

PLANNING PERMISSION

While no architect can guarantee planning approval, the work done in the earlier stages ensures the application is properly informed by policy, context and risk.

STAGE 04:

BUILDING WARRANT

I prepare the technical drawings and information required to secure Building Warrant approval, addressing structure, fire safety, energy, accessibility and compliance.

STAGE 05:

TENDER

I prepare the drawings, schedules and information needed for contractors to price the work. I can help review tenders and highlight differences, risks and assumptions so you can make an informed appointment.

STAGE 06:

CONSTRUCTION

Where I am appointed to continue, I provide construction-stage support through site visits, responses to queries, review of information and assistance with contractor payments and certification. This helps ensure the design intent and approvals are respected as the project is built.

STAGE 07:

HANDOVER

I remain involved during the defects period to help ensure any issues are identified and addressed so the project can be properly concluded.
