This project focused on unlocking additional space within an existing family home through the conversion of an underutilised garage, alongside a series of internal alterations. The existing layout felt constrained, limiting how the home functioned day-to-day. The brief was to create a more generous and flexible arrangement, improving flow between spaces while introducing practical additions to support family life, including utility, storage, and adaptable living areas.

A key aspect of this project was the collaborative design approach. An options appraisal explored three distinct layouts, with the final proposal emerging as a refinement of the earlier schemes. The client was actively involved throughout, contributing ideas and sketches that informed the design direction. This iterative process ensured the outcome was both functional and personal, demonstrating how collaboration can lead to more resolved and meaningful design solutions.

The proposal reworks the internal layout to significantly improve circulation and connectivity. A key move was establishing a more continuous, almost circular route through the ground floor, allowing spaces to flow naturally into one another. The kitchen layout has been reconfigured, with external door positions adjusted to better connect with the garden. Together, these changes remove previous constraints, creating a more intuitive and efficient arrangement that supports everyday movement through the home.

The garage conversion introduces a new, flexible family space that supports both daily use and occasional needs. Designed as a children’s play area, it can also function as a comfortable spare bedroom for visitors. Additional interventions include a dedicated utility and cloak area for coats, boots, and storage, alongside a new ground floor WC. This has been designed with future adaptability in mind, allowing for the straightforward addition of a shower if required.

This project demonstrates how considered internal reconfiguration can transform the experience of a home without the need for large-scale extension. By prioritising circulation, adaptability, and day-to-day usability, the proposal creates a more connected and efficient living environment.

The introduction of a continuous flow through the house allows each space to relate more clearly to the next, reducing friction in how the home is used. Combined with the added functionality of the garage conversion and supporting spaces, the design responds directly to the needs of modern family life.

The project remains ongoing, with the client currently reviewing options and considering the next steps.
