This project began with a fundamental question: can the existing home adapt to a growing family, or is relocation the more viable route? Appointed at an early stage, the brief centred on an options appraisal—testing whether a modest two-bedroom semi-detached property could be reworked to meet expanding spatial demands without compromising how the house functions.

A range of interventions were explored, from targeted internal reconfiguration through to more substantial extension strategies. The process was deliberately analytical - understanding where space could be unlocked, how circulation could improve, and whether meaningful additional accommodation could be achieved within the constraints of the existing structure and site.

The site presented clear challenges. Limited external space, combined with a significant level change to the rear, introduced both design and technical complexity. Any proposal needed to respond carefully to these conditions - resolving levels, maintaining usability, and ensuring the extension felt integrated rather than imposed.

The final proposal developed into a wraparound single-storey extension, paired with strategic internal alterations. This enabled the creation of an additional bedroom at first-floor level, alongside a flexible ground floor guest bedroom or office. Supporting spaces, including a shower room, utility, and much-needed storage, were incorporated, while the kitchen and dining area were opened up to form a more generous and connected living space.

Despite the constraints, the scheme successfully accommodates the full brief - delivering a comprehensive reconfiguration that supports the client’s future needs. The design has been developed and costed, providing a clear basis for decision-making. The project now sits at a key point: proceed with a considered transformation of the existing home, or move towards a new property altogether.
