This project combines a single-storey rear extension with a comprehensive internal reconfiguration, aimed at improving how the home functions as a whole. The proposal focuses on creating a more connected arrangement, where spaces are better aligned with day-to-day use rather than simply increasing floor area. The extension is therefore considered as part of a wider strategy - supporting a clearer, more usable layout across both new and existing parts of the home.

At the centre of the scheme is a reworked kitchen and dining space, designed around how the client cooks, hosts, and uses the space on a daily basis. The layout prioritises clarity and usability, with the island acting as both a functional workspace and a social point within the room. This space forms the core of the home, establishing a natural flow between preparation, dining, and informal gathering, while maintaining a strong visual connection to the adjacent living area.

The living space is positioned within the extension, where a combination of overhead rooflight and large sliding doors introduces balanced natural light throughout the day. This dual aspect improves both the quality of light and the sense of openness within the room. Direct access to the garden reinforces the relationship between internal and external space, allowing the living area to extend outward and function as part of a wider, connected environment.

The extension introduces a more defined and private principal bedroom suite, set apart from the main living areas. It incorporates a walk-in wardrobe and en-suite, supporting a clear and practical daily routine. Direct access to the rear garden enhances the suite, strengthening its connection to the external environment while maintaining a sense of retreat. This approach creates a balanced layout, where openness and privacy are carefully considered in line with how the home is used.

This project reflects a measured approach to extending a home — one where the focus is not simply on adding space, but on ensuring that every part of the design works in a clear and practical way. Decisions have been made with long-term use in mind, balancing layout, light, and buildability to deliver a scheme that is both considered and achievable.

Developed through a structured design process, the proposal has been carefully coordinated through planning, technical design, and tender, providing clarity on scope, cost, and construction from an early stage. This reduces uncertainty and allows the project to move forward with confidence.

With works due to commence on site in May 2026, the project represents a well-resolved transition from concept to construction — grounded in a straightforward idea: that good design should not only look right, but work properly in practice.
