This project combines a single-storey rear extension with a full internal reconfiguration, addressing what was previously a constrained layout. The existing kitchen and dining spaces were limited for a family of four, restricting how the home could be used day to day. The proposal therefore focuses on both increasing space and improving how it functions, ensuring the extension works as part of a wider strategy rather than a standalone addition.

At the centre of the scheme is a reworked kitchen, dining, and family arrangement, designed around everyday routines and flexibility of use. A new family area is introduced within the extension, allowing a degree of separation from the original living room — giving the client the option of shared or independent spaces. The kitchen, complete with a breakfast bar, forms part of this setting, creating a social and practical hub that connects directly to the dining area and adjoining rooms.

The relationship between new and existing spaces has been carefully considered to improve flow and usability. The extension links into both the retained and reconfigured parts of the home, with new openings and doors introduced to create a more legible layout. This allows movement between spaces to feel natural, while maintaining the ability to separate areas when required, supporting a more flexible pattern of living.

A key requirement was the inclusion of a utility and WC at ground floor level, despite limited available space. This was resolved through careful planning within the footprint of the original kitchen, including the integration of a WC beneath the stair. The solution required a high level of coordination and problem-solving, but delivers a practical addition that significantly improves how the house operates on a daily basis.

The design was developed collaboratively, supported by 3D visualisations that helped clearly communicate the proposal and test key decisions early in the process. This allowed the client to fully understand how the spaces would work before construction, leading to a more confident and informed progression through the project. Both planning and building warrant stages were secured smoothly, reflecting a well-considered and coordinated approach.

The project is now complete, delivering a more open, functional, and adaptable home environment. It demonstrates how targeted intervention — supported by careful design and clear communication — can transform how a house is used without unnecessary complexity. A return visit is planned to capture the finished space, documenting the transition from concept through to built outcome.
